Our Brothers Gone Before is the title of a two volume set of reference books that document over 40,000 Civil War veterans burials in the State of New Jersey. The project began in earnest in 1989 and continues even though the books were published by Longstreet House in August of 2006. I am currently searching for over 10,000 veterans who had ties to New Jersey and whose names were found in the 1890 Veterans Census, Soldier's and Sailor's pension cards, New Jersey GAR Post necrologies, Newark and Kearny Soldier's Home's necrologies, newspaper obits, county records, etc.

On November 17th, 2007, Chuck and I received the prestigious New Jersey Historical Commission's Award of Recognition for our efforts on Our Brothers Gone Before. We thank them for recognizing our books as being worthy of such high honor.

Governor Corzine Proclaims New Jersey Civil War Anniversary Committee
Jan 5, 2009--- On December 12, 2008, Governor Jon S. Corzine issued an official proclamation commending the New Jersey Civil War 150 Committee, "a group of public spirited citizens with expertise in the history of our state's role in the Civil War" for undertaking the task of creating and publicizing commemorative activities and educational programs around the state during the period of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, from 2011-2015. I was graciously asked to become a member of this committee and I humbly accepted.

We hope that folks with an interest in the final resting place of these honorable men and women will help us to find as many of them as possible for future generations of genealogical researchers. Under "Attachments" at the bottom of this page there are several lists containing the names of the veterans we are currently searching for. If you know where any of them are buried, have an interest in looking for any of them, or think that you might be able to help in some way, please contact me at rfmacavoy@gmail.com or my co-author Chuck at captkelpie@gmail.com

Also under "Attachments" is a sample page from Our Brothers Gone Before.

We will answer your questions about our project and our books or if you have a question about a specific soldier, sailor, or nurse possibly buried in New Jersey.
